The first Illinois flag was officially adopted in 1915, a result of the efforts of Mrs. Ella Park Lawrence and the Daughters of American Revolution. Miss Lucy Derwent's design was selected from among 35 entries submitted by chapters of the D.A.R. The flag features the central image of the state seal on a field of white. In 1969 the current flag was approved (the word ILLINOIS was added).

In 1915 the Daughters of the American Revolution were instrumental in organizing a competition for the design of the state flag. Some of their members designed the winning flag bearing the state seal. The seal consists of an eagle standing on a rock with a red ribbon bearing the state motto in its mouth. A shield bearing the Stars and Stripes leans on the rock and a laurel wreath.
