Blue represents peace and hope
Red stands for the blood of the country's martyrs
Yellow stands for the country's wealth and prosperity
Star symbolizes unity and the brilliant future for the country
In 1963, a new flag was adopted with a blue field divided diagonally from the lower hoist corner to upper fly corner by a red stripe bordered by two narrow yellow stripes and with a yellow, five-pointed star in the upper hoist corner. on 1 August 1964, the country's name was changed to Democratic Republic of the Congo
Kabila's son Joseph became president following the assassination of his father in 2001. He had brought a measure of stability to the country and proclaimed the country's “Third Republic” on February 18, 2006. The old national flag of the sixties was made the official flag, though the field was a lighter shade of blue.
