Has Your Flag Had a Rough Summer? Here’s What to Check Before Fall

by | Sep 3, 2026 | Blogs

If your American flag has been flying outside all summer, it has probably been through quite a bit.

Long days in the sun, afternoon storms, rain, and plenty of wind can all take a toll on a flag over time. Here in Colorado, changing weather and strong winds can make that wear happen even faster.

As we head toward fall, it’s a good time to step outside and take a closer look at your flag and flagpole. You don’t need to do a full inspection or know anything about flagpoles to spot most common problems. A few minutes is usually enough.

Start With the Flag

The easiest place to start is the flag itself.

Look at the outer edge of the flag, especially the end that flies freely in the wind. This area tends to take the most abuse and is often the first place you’ll notice fraying.

A few loose threads might not seem like much at first, but once a flag begins to fray, wind can make the damage worse pretty quickly.

Also take a look at the colors. Outdoor flags naturally fade over time, especially when they’re exposed to direct sunlight every day. If the red and blue have become noticeably faded or the entire flag is looking tired, it may simply be time for a fresh one.

Small tears, damaged stitching, or wear around the header and grommets are also worth paying attention to.

Sometimes you don’t realize how worn a flag has become until you take it down and look at it up close.

Check the Rope While You’re There

If you have an external halyard flagpole, take a look at the rope.

Flagpole rope spends its life outside too. Sun, wind, moisture, and constant movement against the pulley can eventually cause it to become stiff, thin, or frayed.

Run your hand along the accessible portion of the rope and look for areas that seem especially worn.

If your halyard is already looking rough, replacing it before it breaks can save you a much bigger headache later. A broken rope can leave you with a flagpole that’s much harder to work with, especially if the halyard ends up out of reach.

Take a Look at the Clips and Hardware

The small parts are easy to forget about until one of them stops working.

Check your snap hooks or flag clips to make sure they’re opening and closing normally. Look for excessive rust, bending, cracks, or anything that seems loose.

You can also watch the top of the pole while raising or lowering the flag. The halyard should move through the pulley smoothly without constantly catching or requiring excessive force.

If something suddenly feels different than it used to, it’s worth figuring out why before forcing it.

Listen to Your Flagpole

This might sound strange, but sometimes your flagpole will tell you when something isn’t quite right.

New rattling, banging, or unusual movement can be a sign that a clip, halyard, or another piece of hardware needs attention.

Some noise from an outdoor flagpole is normal, particularly on windy days. But if you’ve had the same flagpole for years, you probably have a pretty good idea of what it normally sounds like.

If something suddenly sounds different, take a look.

Don’t Wait Until Winter to Find a Problem

Fall is a convenient time to do all of this because the weather is still relatively comfortable and winter hasn’t arrived yet.

Discovering a worn halyard or damaged piece of hardware on a nice September afternoon is one thing. Discovering it when it’s freezing outside and you’re trying to lower your flag is another.

Taking care of small issues now can help keep your flagpole operating properly through the colder months.

And sometimes there isn’t anything wrong at all. Your flag looks good, the rope is in good condition, the clips work, and everything moves the way it should.

That’s good news too.

When Is It Time for a New Flag?

There isn’t a specific number of months that tells you exactly when an outdoor flag needs to be replaced.

A flag that’s flown occasionally in a protected area may stay in great condition for a long time. Another flag that’s flown every day in an open, windy location can wear much faster.

Condition matters more than age.

If you’re seeing significant fraying, tears, badly faded colors, or damage that keeps getting worse, it’s probably time to replace the flag rather than trying to squeeze another season out of it.

Get Ready for the Season Ahead

Your flag and flagpole don’t need a lot of attention, but checking them every once in a while goes a long way.

Take a few minutes this fall to look everything over. Check the flag, rope, clips, and hardware, and make sure everything is still working the way it should.
